Transporting cake safely - practical tips

How to Transport a Cake Without Damage

You've got a beautiful custom cake. Now you need to get it from point A to point B in one piece. Transporting a cake safely is easier than you think, but it does require some planning. Here's what works.

Use a Flat, Non-Slip Surface

Put the cake box on the flattest surface in your car. The floor behind the front passenger seat is usually the best spot. It's flat and the cake can't slide forward during braking. Put a non-slip mat or damp towel underneath the box to keep it from shifting. Never put a cake on a car seat. Seats are angled and the cake will slide off the moment you turn a corner.

Keep It Cool

Buttercream softens in heat. If it's a warm day, blast the AC before you put the cake in the car. Don't put the cake in the boot (trunk) because it gets hot in there, especially in summer. Keep the cake in the air-conditioned cabin with you. On very hot days (above 25°C), we recommend picking up the cake as close to your event time as possible.

Drive Like the Cake Depends on It

Because it does. Brake gently. Take corners slowly. Avoid potholes. This sounds obvious, but people forget they have a cake in the car once they're in traffic. If you have someone with you, let them hold the box steady on their lap, but only if the cake is small enough.

For larger cakes, the car floor is safer than anyone's hands. Hands get tired and shaky over longer drives.

What to Do When You Arrive

Carry the box with both hands from underneath, not by the sides. Set it down on a flat table immediately. Open the box and check. If there's minor damage (a small dent in the buttercream), you can smooth it out with a butter knife dipped in warm water.
