How to Choose the Perfect Cake Theme

Not sure what theme to pick? Start with your event, your colors, or something personal. Here is how.

Choosing a cake theme - tips and inspiration

How to Choose a Cake Theme: A Practical Guide

Picking a cake theme sounds simple until you actually have to do it. There are too many options, too many Pinterest boards, and too many opinions from people who aren't paying for the cake. Here's how to narrow it down and land on something you'll be happy with.

    Start with the Event

The event type does most of the work for you. A children's birthday party has different energy than a corporate farewell or a baby shower. Match the cake to the room it will be in.

For kids: their current favorite character, animal, or color is usually the right answer. Ask the child, not Pinterest. A 4-year-old who is obsessed with dinosaurs does not care about your minimalist aesthetic.

For adults: think about the person being celebrated. Their hobby, job, favorite color, or a shared memory makes a better theme than generic "elegant" or "rustic." Specific is always more interesting.

    Pick a Color Scheme First

If you're stuck on a theme, start with colors instead. Colors set the mood without needing a specific concept.

    • Pastels (soft pink, mint, lavender) — baby showers, spring birthdays, gentle celebrations
    • Bold and bright (red, yellow, electric blue) — kids' parties, fun adult birthdays
    • Neutral and metallic (white, cream, gold, black) — weddings, engagements, milestone birthdays
    • Earth tones (sage, terracotta, brown) — autumn events, boho-style parties

Two or three colors are enough. More than that and the cake starts looking busy. If your party already has a color scheme for decorations, match the cake to it.

    Where to Find Inspiration

Pinterest is the obvious one, but it can also overwhelm you. Search specifically: "buttercream birthday cake green gold" instead of just "birthday cake." The more specific your search, the more useful the results.

Instagram is good for seeing what local bakers actually make versus what's staged for a photoshoot. Look at tagged photos, not just the curated grid.

Your own photos work too. The wallpaper from a favorite trip, a piece of clothing, a textile pattern — real-life references often produce the most original cakes. Send your baker the image and explain what you like about it.

    Keep It Achievable

Some themes translate to cake better than others. A watercolor wash in buttercream? Easy. A photorealistic portrait? Not happening in buttercream, and it looks strange on fondant too.

Talk to your baker before committing to a design. We'll tell you what works within our style and your budget. Most of our cakes fall in the €50-100 range, and we can make something special within that.

Use our cake calculator to check sizing and pricing. Then start your order with your theme ideas and we'll make it happen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What if I cannot decide on a theme?
Start with a color scheme. Two or three colors that match your event decor will look great on a cake even without a specific theme. You can also tell your baker the occasion and let them suggest ideas.
Can I combine two themes on one cake?
It depends on the themes. Two related ideas (flowers and butterflies) can work. Two unrelated ideas (dinosaurs and elegant gold) usually compete and the cake looks confused. Pick one main theme and keep it focused.
Should the cake theme match my party decorations?
Matching colors is more important than matching a specific theme. If your party decorations are pink and gold, a pink and gold cake will look right even if the cake does not have the same motif as your banners.
