When to Order a Cake: Lead Times Explained

One week minimum for a custom cake. More time for complex designs. Here is how our lead times actually work.

When to order a cake - lead times explained

How Far in Advance Should You Order a Cake?

Wondering when to order your cake? The short answer: at least 1 week before your event. That gives us enough time to plan, bake, and decorate your cake properly. But the real answer depends on what you're ordering.

Simple Designs: 1 Week Is Usually Enough

For a standard custom cake with a clean buttercream finish — single color, maybe some piped borders or a message on top — one week of lead time works. This applies to most birthday cakes and smaller celebrations. We can sometimes manage less for very simple orders, but we can't guarantee availability on short notice.

Complex Designs: Book 2-3 Weeks Ahead

If you want detailed piping, multiple colors, hand-painted elements, or a larger tiered cake, give us at least 2 weeks. These designs take more planning and hands-on time. For wedding cakes or large event orders, 3+ weeks is ideal.

The busiest periods are around holidays (Sinterklaas, Christmas, Eid) and the spring wedding season. During these times, we fill up fast. Booking early means you actually get your preferred date.

What Happens When You Place an Order

Here's the process at LittleCakesNL: you submit your order request with your date, size, flavor, and design idea. We reply within 24 hours with a quote. Once confirmed and paid, your date is locked in. We bake the cake 1-2 days before your pickup or delivery date in Vlaardingen, Rotterdam, or anywhere in Zuid-Holland.

Not sure what size to order? Our cake calculator helps you figure out portions based on your guest count.
