Smash Cakes for Baby's First Birthday: What to Know

Smash cakes are small — typically 10-14 cm in diameter. Your baby isn't going to eat the whole thing (most of it ends up on their face and the floor). The cake just needs to be big enough for little hands to grab and squish. A 10 cm bento-sized cake works well for the smash, and if you want to serve guests too, order a separate larger cake for cutting.

All our smash cakes use the same quality ingredients as our regular cakes — real butter, fresh eggs, vanilla or chocolate base. We decorate with buttercream, which is safe for babies. No fondant (which can be a choking hazard for small children), no artificial colors unless you specifically request them.

We use halal ingredients across all our products. If your baby has specific allergies, let us know when you order and we'll advise on what works.

Put a plastic sheet or old towel under the high chair. Dress your baby in something you don't mind getting covered in buttercream (or just a diaper — those photos are classic). Natural light works best, so set up near a window if you're indoors.

Some babies dive right in. Others stare at the cake suspiciously for 10 minutes. Both make great photos. Don't force it.
