How Long Does a Buttercream Cake Last?

You picked up your cake, the party is tomorrow, and now you're wondering: will this still be good? Here's exactly how long our buttercream cakes last, and how to store them so nothing goes wrong.

    Room Temperature: 1–2 Days

A buttercream cake keeps well at room temperature for 1–2 days, as long as your room stays below 22°C. The buttercream forms a light crust on the outside that actually protects the sponge underneath.

Keep the cake away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A kitchen counter away from the stove works. Don't put it near a window in summer.

If you're collecting the cake the day before your event, room temperature is fine overnight. No need to refrigerate for a single night.

    Refrigerator: 4–5 Days

In the fridge, our cakes stay fresh for 4–5 days. The buttercream hardens when cold but softens back to its original texture once it returns to room temperature.

Important: take the cake out of the fridge 30–45 minutes before serving. Cold buttercream tastes muted. At room temperature, the vanilla, chocolate, and fruit flavors come through properly.

Store the cake in its box. If the box is open or damaged, cover the cake loosely with cling film. Don't press the film against the frosting — it will pull the design off when you remove it.

    Freezer: Up to 2 Months

You can freeze buttercream cake for up to 2 months. Wrap the entire cake (or individual slices) tightly in cling film, then again in aluminum foil. The double layer prevents freezer burn.

To thaw: move the cake to the fridge the night before, then bring it to room temperature 30–45 minutes before eating. Don't microwave frozen cake — it melts the buttercream unevenly and makes the sponge rubbery.

Freezing works best with our vanilla cream and chocolate ganache fillings. Fruit-based fillings (strawberry, raspberry) can release a bit of moisture when thawing, but the taste stays good.

Signs Your Cake Has Gone Off

Buttercream going bad is obvious. The color changes (yellowing), it smells sour instead of buttery, or the sponge feels dry and crumbly. If the cake has been at room temperature for more than 2 days in warm weather, don't risk it.

Our cakes use halal ingredients with real butter and fresh cream. There are no preservatives, which means great taste but a shorter shelf life than supermarket cakes. That's the tradeoff, and we think it's worth it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I collect the cake 2 days before my event?
Yes. Store it in the fridge and take it out 30–45 minutes before serving. The cake will taste just as fresh as the day it was made.
Does the frosting melt in a warm car?
Buttercream softens above 22°C. If it is a hot day, use your car air conditioning and place the cake on a flat surface in the footwell. Avoid the boot in summer — it gets too warm. A short drive of 30 minutes or less is usually fine.
Can I freeze a decorated cake with a topper?
Remove acrylic toppers, fresh flowers, and macarons before freezing. These do not freeze well. The buttercream cake itself freezes perfectly. Reattach decorations after thawing.
Why does the buttercream look different after refrigeration?
Cold buttercream looks firmer and slightly matte. This is normal. Once the cake reaches room temperature the buttercream returns to its original soft, glossy finish.
