How to Design Your Custom Cake: From Idea to Reality
You have a vision for a cake. Maybe it's clear — "pink ombré with gold flecks." Maybe it's vague — "something elegant for my mom's 60th." Either way, turning an idea into an actual custom cake design takes a little planning. Here's how the process works when you work with a baker.
Start with the Occasion, Not the Design
Before you open Pinterest, answer three questions: What is the event? How many people are eating? What is the general mood?
A kids' birthday party calls for bold colors and fun shapes. A formal anniversary dinner needs something understated. A baby shower might land somewhere in between. The occasion sets the tone, and the design follows from there.
Knowing your guest count also determines cake size, which affects what designs are even possible. A small 16 cm cake can't hold the same detail as a 26 cm one. Use our cake calculator to figure out the right size first.
Gather Inspiration (But Stay Flexible)
Pinterest and Instagram are useful starting points. Save 3-5 images that match the style you're going for. Look for patterns in what you like — maybe it's the color palette, or the way the frosting is textured, or a specific topper.
Send those images to your baker, but don't expect a pixel-perfect copy. Every baker has different tools, materials, and specialties. We work only with buttercream, so a fondant design in your reference will be adapted. The feel stays the same; the execution is different.
Tell your baker what you like about each image. "I love the colors in this one" or "I like how simple this looks" is more helpful than just sending a link without context.
Work with Your Baker
Good communication makes good cakes. When you contact us, share:
- The event type and date
- Number of guests
- Flavor preferences (we offer vanilla and chocolate with multiple fillings)
- Colors or theme
- Inspiration images if you have them
- Budget range
We'll come back with a design suggestion and a price. If something needs adjusting — smaller size, different colors, simpler decoration — we sort it out before baking starts. No surprises.
What to Expect on Delivery Day
Your cake will look like what we agreed on. If we discussed a cream-and-gold two-tier with rosettes, that's what you'll get. We photograph our cakes before delivery, so you'll often get a sneak peek.
Handle the cake carefully during transport. Keep it flat, keep it cool. If you have questions about storage, read our tips on how to keep buttercream cakes fresh.
