Ordering a Custom Cake in Rotterdam as an Expat
Moving to Rotterdam is exciting, but figuring out how things work here takes time. Ordering a custom cake shouldn't be one of those headaches. At Little Cakes, we work in English (and Dutch), and our entire ordering process is online. No phone calls, no guessing.
Here's how it works: you fill out our order form with your cake details — size, flavour, design, and pickup or delivery date. We reply with a quote, usually within 24 hours. Once confirmed and paid, we bake your cake fresh and have it ready for pickup in Vlaardingen or deliver it across Rotterdam and Zuid-Holland.
We ask for at least one week of lead time. For simple designs, we can sometimes do less, but a week gives us room to get your cake exactly right. If you have a photo of what you want, send it along. We work from reference images all the time.
What to Expect from a Dutch Home Baker
Home baking is a real thing in the Netherlands. Plenty of skilled bakers work from home kitchens, and the quality often beats what you find in chain bakeries. We're one of them — based in Vlaardingen, just outside Rotterdam.
Our cakes are buttercream only. No fondant. This is a deliberate choice because buttercream tastes better. If you've had fondant-covered cakes before and found the outside too sweet or waxy, you'll appreciate the difference. Buttercream is smooth, creamy, and actually enjoyable to eat.
Every ingredient we use is halal. We're not certified halal, but we only buy halal ingredients. For expats from Muslim-majority countries, or anyone who prefers halal, this means you can order without extra questions.

We keep our flavour menu focused. For cake bases, you choose between vanilla and chocolate. For fillings, the options are vanilla cream, chocolate ganache, white chocolate ganache, vanilla with strawberry, or vanilla with raspberry.
These combinations cover most preferences. Vanilla cake with vanilla cream and strawberry is our most popular choice for birthdays. Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache is the go-to for anyone who wants something rich.

Delivery and Pickup for Rotterdam Expats
Pickup is from our kitchen in Vlaardingen. If you have a car or don't mind a short trip on the metro, it's straightforward. We'll give you a time window on your pickup day.
We also deliver across Rotterdam and the wider Zuid-Holland region. Delivery fees depend on distance, and we'll confirm the cost when we send your quote. Popular delivery areas include Rotterdam Centrum, Kralingen, Hillegersberg, Delfshaven, and IJsselmonde.
For expats who are still getting to know the area: Vlaardingen is about 20 minutes west of Rotterdam Centraal by metro. It's an easy trip, and you can combine it with a walk along the harbour.
