    Why We Chose Buttercream Over Fondant

    When we started LittleCakesNL, we made one decision early: buttercream only. No fondant. Not as a temporary choice, but as a permanent one.

    The reason is taste. Fondant is a sugar paste wrapped around a cake. It creates a smooth, almost plastic surface that photographs well. But at the table, most people peel it off. They eat the sponge and the filling, and the fondant goes in the bin. That is a lot of effort and material for something nobody eats.

    Buttercream is different. It is made from butter, sugar, and flavouring. It tastes like something you actually want in your mouth. When you bite into a buttercream cake, the outside is part of the experience — not a wrapper you have to remove first.

    Buttercream Design Is More Versatile Than You Think

    People assume fondant is needed for detailed designs. It is not. Buttercream can be smoothed flat, piped into flowers, textured into patterns, painted with food colours, and shaped into three-dimensional elements. We create detailed custom designs every week using nothing but buttercream.

    Ombré fades, geometric patterns, floral arrangements, drip effects, character illustrations — all buttercream. The only things we cannot do are the hard, angular shapes that fondant is known for. And honestly, those are not what most customers want anyway.

    What customers do want is a cake that looks good and tastes good. Buttercream delivers both.

    Our Flavour Combinations

    We keep our flavour menu focused. Two sponge options: vanilla and chocolate. Five fillings: vanilla cream, chocolate ganache, white chocolate ganache, vanilla with strawberry, and vanilla with raspberry.

    These combinations cover a wide range of preferences without overwhelming you with choices. Chocolate sponge with chocolate ganache for people who want full chocolate intensity. Vanilla with raspberry for something lighter and fruity. White chocolate ganache for a sweeter, creamier option.
